John Piper looks at the life of Charles Spurgeon

Charles Haddon Spurgeon (1834-92) was the best-known preacher for most of the second half of the nineteenth century. He was an Englishman who made preaching an art form.

In his hey-day, Spurgeon stood before a congregation of 10,000 at London's Metropolitan Tabernacle. He boomed out the Word for decades without any electronic amplification.

Whilst none of Spurgeon's sermons survive in audio format, they most certainly do in written form. They are numerous, but only make up a small portion of his legacy.

Perhaps Spurgeon's best known work is his Treasury of David which has painstakingly been made available online here. It was gathered after being delivered in weekly installments over two decades.

As magnificent as Spurgeon's work is, it seems all the more majestic when placed against the dark backdrop of his personal life. He endured depression, bereavement, personal attack, spiritual onslaught, theological controversy, was regularly confined to bed with sickness and was often simply exhausted.

Little wonder men like John Piper find him so inspiring. Take the time to listen to Piper describe the journey and legacy of Charles Spurgeon.

If you admired the man before, this will amaze you.

Christian Quotes

“Give me one hundred preachers who fear nothing but sin, and desire nothing but God, and I care not a straw whether they be clergymen or laymen; such alone will shake the gates of hell and set up the kingdom of heaven on Earth.”
