Protestant Christianity. Are we fighting a losing battle?

A recent survey of American Christian culture revealed the shocking news that Protestant Christianity was about to become the minority.

The American Religious Identification Survey shows, predictably perhaps, religious faith of any kind in America is on the wane. Despite all the talk of Muslim extremists taking over, Americans are much more likely it seems to drop faith altogether than convert to something else.

If the current trend continues, by next year the United States of America will no longer be a Protestant nation because by then, less than half its population will be Protestant for the first time since the Pilgrims landed.

Interestingly, however, many Americans still believe in "God". Overwhelmingly they believe in God. They just have no confidence that the current Church knows who he is, so they basically believe in a God of their own understanding (and usually their own creation).

This is further supported by recent observations by the Wall Street Journal that even though only 39% of Americans attend Church, yet 75% claim they pray to God regularly.

This prompted the author to ask, 'Is praying becoming a religion unto itself?'

I have a news flash for him; it has always been that way. According to the Bible, if man does not know the true God, he does not worship nothing, he substitutes God for something else. He either finds a false god, creates one himself or makes himself god.

Several more observations need to be made when analysing such a trend. For example, how many true Christians do you know who no longer go to Church? Plenty. Therefore, not all those who pray but don't attend Church are worshipping a false god.

Which brings us back to my first point. The Protestant Church is on the decline and instead of saving it, non-believers choose to let it die and have no real faith while Christians would prefer to cut themselves off from the rest of the body and maintain their own private practice.

Then when you consider how few Churches within Protestantism qualify as evangelical under the original meaning of term, you get an idea of how perilous the Church's position is.

Hence my question; How do we turn things around?

If you have some ideas, post them here.
